More About Us

The MEC was founded in 2003 as a partnership between the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission and Ramapo College. The center’s mission is to “increase awareness and enjoyment of the Meadowlands District’s unique and vital urban ecosystem.”

The MEC’s programs are designed to engage students and the public in the natural world. The center’s field trips take students to a variety of locations in the Meadowlands, including wetlands, forests, and meadows. The MEC’s educational exhibits provide information about the Meadowlands’ ecology, history, and culture. The center’s teacher training workshops help educators incorporate environmental education into their curriculum.

The MEC is a valuable resource for students and the public who want to learn more about the Meadowlands. The center’s programs are designed to be engaging and informative, and they provide a unique opportunity to experience the natural world.

Here are some of the projects that were developed in collaboration with the NSF, Ramapo College and the Meadowlands Environmental Center:

  • The Meadowlands Ecosystem Study: This study was a five-year research project that examined the ecology of the Meadowlands. The study was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and involved researchers from Ramapo College, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, and other institutions.
  • The Meadowlands Environmental Education Program: This program was developed to provide environmental education to students in the Meadowlands region. The program was funded by the NSF and involved educators from Ramapo College, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, and other institutions.
  • The Meadowlands Environmental Stewardship Program: This program was developed to train volunteers to help protect the Meadowlands environment. The program was funded by the NSF and involved volunteers from the Meadowlands region.

These are just a few of the projects that were developed in collaboration with the NSF, Ramapo College and the Meadowlands Environmental Center. These projects have helped to increase awareness and enjoyment of the Meadowlands District’s unique and vital urban ecosystem.
