Title: Navigating the Night Sky

Duration: 90 minutes

Badge/Patch Correlations: Astronomy Fun Patch

Overview: Can you imagine a time before GPS? Before the compass? This program will challenge girls to do so, teaching age-old methods of navigation using only the night sky.

Activities:

  • Use a constellation chart to locate stars and constellations
  • Learn to orientate yourself using stars and constellations
  • Visit the William D. McDowell Observatory to view the night sky.

Title: Live Green

Duration: 90 minutes

Overview:  Designing an indoor environment means creating a living space that is not just comfortable but healthy too. This program challenges girls to, upon considering the many techniques and technologies available, design a green home, then to build a model that reflects their design.

Activities:

  • Conduct a survey of the our science building to learn about green products and technologies
  • Design and build a model of a green home.

Title: Pests and Pals

Duration: 90 minutes

Overview: This program explains the concept of biodiversity and its importance in an ecosystem. In addition to certain species’ effects on humans, girls will explore the ways in which humans threaten biodiversity.

Activities:

  • View plant and animal specimens considered pests and learn to identify them.
  • Conduct a simple biodiversity survey of a natural area

Title: Salt Marsh Ecology II     Image of a salt marsh

Duration: 90 minutes

Overview: As a wetland, the salt marsh habitat serves many vital functions both to nature and humans. This program provides an introduction to these functions as well as the methods used to determine whether a particular salt marsh is healthy and functioning properly.

Activities:

  • Measure the following water quality parameters: dissolved oxygen, salinity, and turbidity.
  • Survey local fauna by collecting a sampling of salt marsh organisms

Title: Sky Study    

Duration: 90 minutes

Badge/Patch Correlations: Sky Badge (Legacy)

Overview: With so many earthly distractions it’s easy to ignore the sky and the inspiration it can provide. This program allows girls to rediscover the sky and the wonder they likely felt when they first looked up.

Activities:

  • Tour the night sky to find common constellations
  • View individual celestial objects using a reflector telescope

Program fee:

  • 90 min. program: $10/scout  (No cost to leaders/chaperones)

Policies:

Minimum of 6 scouts is required to run a program

Required adult to child ratio:   1:12

Reservations should be made at least 2 weeks in advance
